2012: Would the government let society know if a apocalyptic event was to occur?

I am tied whether it would be a good idea to let every one know or not. On one end, there would be anarchy, unbelievable chaos. but if it was never mentioned, people would most likely not be around those they loved most, spending quality time and savoring every memory they could. Saying what they always wanted to say but never did. In any case, I think the Government would keep it hush and just let it happen like a bunch of pansies. I would like to think in the event of a asteroid, some drillers would fly up to it, dig a hold and blow it up like they did in the movie Armageddon, but I think the government would like to keep their practicality by doing nothing extreme or rash or out of the box in order to save the planet. Anyway, I just hope, of all the different cataclysms that could unfold, I hope a asteroid is unlikely, and massive solar flares. Putting denial aside, do you think something will happen dec 2012? Natural disaster? Solar flare? asteroid? polar shift?
